Aircraft Dealer vs Broker

There is much confusion over the difference between a "dealer" and a "broker". A dealer sells the airplane he owns. A broker sells an airplane for the owner for a commission. In a slow market, many dealers would rather broker airplanes so they avoid long holding time expenses.

As a seller, a dealer will provide the fastest case sale. However, they can only pay 10-15% below retail market value. If you are not in need of immediate cash, the brokerage arrangement might be best. As a seller, it is prudent to pick your broker wisely. Some questions to consider:

  1. Does he/she have a good reputation?

  2. How big is their inventory? With a large inventory, what kind of individual attention would you expect?

  3. How knowledgeable are they on your aircraft type?

  4. How long have they been in the business?
